Johto...

T'would appear that I am getting closer to the western town called "Cherry". The distance is far and days have passed. I found myself having to cross fields of long grass and walking into birds and rats. The entire place is different, different from my origin, especially with the harsh colder weather.

No matter what, I took my chances in fighting today. Manji has..."left a trail". If this is what I must do...

Then it seems quite simple enough. What I want to know is that which one of these creatures is another good companion?

A rat or a bird?

Bird. Definitely the bird. Er, Pidgey. Or a Spearow, if you manage to find one. [so serious.]

Uh- hi. [who says 'greetings' now wow]

Well, Pidgey's kinda better in terms of utility. You can teach it Fly later on!

Yeah. [a beat.] Wow, you're really new to Pokemon, aren't you? Don't worry! The Great Marui Bunta will help you out!

[infodump incoming!!] When I said you could "teach" it Fly, I meant teaching it the HM Fly. HM stands for Hidden Machine, and techniques taught by HMs are super useful outside battle. This means, you'll be able to ride the Pokemon and fly around Johto--and Kanto now too, I guess. But you'll need a badge for that if you're a trainer. Breeders don't 'cause they have privileges and all that.

Bird is much better than rat. Rat is vermin.

[Birds are also better fodder to steal, but he's going to keep that bit to himself.]

Of course not. Are filthy creatures that steal and bloat selves on others hard work.

See no reason why should like vermin.

[This guy was really archaic. Was that the right word? Maybe not.]

I think they're both pretty cool. [But he chose the pidgey, which can be seen perched on his shoulder.]

Bird, of course!

[Although he shouldn't even get a say in this, being an extremely biased Bird Keeper...]

Heh, no wonder! Flying-types are much faster than others, and their attacks are pretty damn strong! They may lack some in the defense department, but hey, their speed sure makes up for it!

--Oh yeah. The name's Crow Hogan! Nice to meetcha!
