Generally your mate is selected by someone of equal or higher rank for convinience. Of course there have been debauched cases.

Also, divorces were rare and very shameful. THey have no choice but to fall in love. Mostly women don't have a say in that.

They wanted to combine both families, but the girl's family is just...let's say, too toublesome.
